Digital Space is a commissioning scheme run by Lovebytes to support creative people using digital technology.

We are currnetly seeking proposals for projects that are creative and innovative in the use of digital technologies and suitable for public exhibtion.

Applications are invited for the production and/or exhibition of new work. This work may be yet to be made, in-progress or existing. Any work that has been substantially digitally created or that relates substatially to digital culture will be considered. We would like to present the finished work to a broad public audience. Having said that, proposals that push the boundaries of exhibition, intervention and audience interaction are very welcome. The work may be for a standalone exhibition in a gallery or it could be site specific to a public place in Sheffield, it could be only available in a digital format for physical distribution, broadcasting or for downloading to computer or mobile platform (or any combination of these).

Digital Space commissions are presented as part of the annual Lovebytes Festival and at a variety of partner venues throughout the year including The Showroom Cinema, Workstation, University of Sheffield and the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield. The most recent Digital Space Commission is Bit Scapes by HFR-LAB, a three screen video installlation shown as part of Lovebytes at Millennium Galleries, 20 March - 11 June 2006.

Applications are invited by email only.

The deadline for applications to be received by Lovebytes is 28 July 2006.

1. An Introduction to the Digital Space Commissions

Digital Space Commissions provide opportunities for individuals or companies to develop innovative, challenging, experimental and ground-breaking ideas and to experiment with new ways of presenting their work.

The Digital Space commissions were established in 2000 and are now a core part of the annual Lovebytes International Festival of Digital Art. The festival is an international showcase for creative digital work and takes place in March/April in Sheffield, UK.

45 Digital Space Commissions have been successfully completed to date. These have been exhibited at festivals, galleries and media centres around the world. Three DSP publications have been produced and distributed internationally on DVD/CD ROM and Audio CD.

Artists who have previously been commissioned for Digital Space include Terre Thaemlitz, Scanner + Tonne, Butler Brothers and Lia.mc who have created work for a variety of formats and environments including interactive installations, digital audio and video and experimental software based toys and creative media tools.

A full list of previous commissions can be found at:

Lovebytes Digital Space Commissions are funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Arts Council of England.

Lovebytes is a non-profit arts organisation which explores the creative and cultural potential of digital technology and works in partnership with the Sheffield Media and Exhibition Centre to support digital production and exhibition in South Yorkshire.
