This year's showcase of outstanding work from Japan comes with the variety of the tastiest bento box, the fuzzy warmth of a firebrand shochu, and a bit of slap and tickle courtesy of the absurdist comedy ninja troupe.
Recently the boundary between straight promotion clips for broadcast use, and music-driven short or long-form films - intended to be published for DVD release - has become increasingly blurred, leading to numerous unique, top-notch new productions. This has provided a booster jab to the Japanese creative scene, with musicians, directors, designers and animators initiating and collaborating on projects together, based on some wild and fantastic ideas that go beyond the scope of previous works, free from the overbearing influence of the record label, and have been the key to allowing the creators the opportunity to experiment more and express their skills with abundant style.
From skinny budget animations to more ambitious independent short films, this screening of new work features a selection of class acts: from the recently released Video Victim 2 collection by teevee graphics; an excerpt from the hyper crazed SPIT&YELL music film from Taku Inoue of p.i.c.s.; super fresh tracks from W+K Tokyo Lab's anime-hem for Hifana's latest Channel H; a great short Right Place from new directing talent Kosai Sekine; and a wonderfully crafted and positivity infected promo from Caviar's Takeshi Nakamura in collaboration with Towa Tei.
